Most Expensive Men's Sneakers

New Balance
$200

This shoe, the M2001, comes from New Balance's top line of running shoes. The M2001 definitely looks the part of the traditional sneaker, with bright white laces and a synthetic mesh upper, which makes for a comfortable fit on the foot. The thick cushioned sole absorbs the impact when running or racing on concrete. Despite the thick cushioning, the shoe is flexible and not too heavy.

Bally
$295

The Bally family business was originally a ribbon- and suspender-making operation in Switzerland. In the 1850s, a new generation of Bally sons turned to shoemaking and by 1881 had opened a shop on London's New Bond Street. Today, Bally has about 200 stores around the world, where they sell accessories, handbags, duffel bags, clothing and, of course, shoes. These chocolate leather sneakers are available at Bally stores in New York City and Beverly Hills.

Converse
$300

Pintando Pasos Converse sneakers start life as plain Chuck Taylor Converse shoes. They are then shipped--at the rate of 80 pairs per month--to the village of Pinotepa de Don Luis in Oaxaca, Mexico. There, children enrolled in a village art program use traditional Mexican handicraft techniques to decorate the shoes, which are then returned to Converse and sold--at $300 per pair--throughout Europe and North and South America. The proceeds from sales of this one-of-a-kind shoe benefit Pinotepa de Don Luis's art program. Sure, they're expensive, but at least this is one pair of sneakers you can buy with a clean conscience.

adidas
$300

These leather Ali sneakers from adidas Originals are emblazoned with a reproduction of Andy Warhol's portrait of boxing great Muhammad Ali. The sneakers are part of a larger collection, Ali by adidas, which was released in November 2005 and includes a full range of styles for men. These bold blue numbers feature the trademark adidas stripes and will definitely pump you up for the sporting activity of your choice--even if it's not boxing.

Prada
Approximately $325

Known around the world for their status-symbol black nylon handbags, Prada's apparel is utilitarian, androgynous and modern. Their sport shoes for men and women are as functional and sleek as their clothes. This bright, cheery pair does more than keep you pounding the pavement, however. A day-glo orange and purple color scheme also keeps you visible to oncoming motorists, while the vertical red "Prada" label below the laces will satisfy your inner exercise snob.

Hogan
$345

With retail locations in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan and Miami, Hogan is little brother to the better-known Tods brand, the Italian maker of pebble-soled driving shoes for the car-and-driver set. Despite the high price point, these sneakers are among the most practical on our list, with a sturdy rubber sole, a rounded toe and colors dark enough to justify a stomp through the mud. Other color pairings including yellow and white, white with a black sole, plain black and various shades of brown.

Gucci
$375

It's like a pair of Keds were visited by their fairy godmother the night before the big ball. Gucci's dark blue laceup sneakers are made out of Guccissima leather with a signature web-and-rubber sole. They formula is familiar enough not to look flashy--at first glance. Get a little closer though, and Gucci's trademark double G logo will jump out at you. And of course, that's the point. Best of all, these shoes stay Gucci after the clock strikes midnight.

Bottega Veneta
$500

With sporty orange detailing, a green body and a taupe toe, these Bottega Veneta Toro Milano sneakers work with jeans or khakis just as well as with workout sweats. Diagonal orange stitching and iridescent fabric add a playful touch that says, "I may work out, but I don't sweat."

Bottega Veneta
$590

This Italian fashion house, helmed by Tomas Maier, has long been known for its extensive and extravagant handbag and luggage collections made of woven leather. Luckily for sporting enthusiasts, their sneakers are made with the same high standards and attention to detail. The taupe Pony Cricket sneakers, pictured above, are perhaps the most stylish way to get around town under your own power. Just avoid those mud puddles.

Nike
$1,000 to $1,500

Rumor has it that there are fewer than 40 pairs of these Nike limited edition Air Force Ones, called Also Known As and produced in conjunction with a book celebrating the art of graffiti. The sneakers that were produced were only given to people involved with the release of the book, but Nom de Guerre, a trendy Manhattan men's boutique with additional locations in Brooklyn, Los Angeles, Toronto and Tokyo, has a pair on display. The shoes aren't currently for sale but are expected to fetch between $1,000 and $1,500 when Nom de Guerre decides to release them.
